Media planning and buying, sharpened by 20 years of direct response.
Media planning is deciding which channels will reach your audience and in what proportion; media buying is negotiating and booking that space at the best available price. VCM does both in-house, across print, out-of-home, radio, TV and digital, for clients spending from a few thousand pounds a month to six-figure annual budgets — with no group-buying obligations dictating the plan. We plan campaigns that perform, and we negotiate rates that make CFOs nod. Independent thinking, end-to-end accountability, every channel covered.
What we do
Strategy and planning
Every campaign starts with a real conversation about what you’re trying to achieve. Sales? Leads? Brand-building? Footfall? We back the brief with channel mix, audience analysis, market context and a plan you can defend in a board meeting. Every plan is built against the 2026 UK media landscape, not last year’s channel mix.
Negotiation and buying
Decades of trading relationships across print, OOH, digital, radio and TV mean we don’t pay rate card. Neither will you. We negotiate hard so your media budget works further than it should. A meaningful share of that leverage comes from our late space specialism — inventory media owners need to fill before deadline.
Trafficking and delivery
We coordinate creative delivery to media owners, manage spec sheets, handle bookings and confirmations, and chase tear sheets. The unsexy part of advertising — done so you don’t have to think about it.
Reporting and review
Regular performance reviews against the metrics that actually matter to you. Where it’s working, we double down. Where it isn’t, we say so — and we change it.
Why clients work with us
- One accountable team from brief to invoice
- Direct-response thinking baked in — every plan has a number attached
- Independent: no group-buying obligations, no undisclosed kickbacks
- Transparent costs and clean reporting
VCM have supported our advertising activity with care, efficiency and a strong understanding of our needs, for many years. James manages our advertising bookings, helps source new publications, and gathers costs for potential opportunities, making the process much easier for us to manage internally. He is always helpful, responsive and willing to go the extra mile to support our campaigns. As part of this wider support, VCM also manage our PPC activity, helping us review performance, discuss priorities and make informed decisions through regular monthly check-ins with Danny. VCM provide a reliable, friendly and well-organised service, helping us manage and develop our advertising and digital marketing in a way that feels straightforward, collaborative and well supported.
What independence actually changes
Being independent isn't a slogan on this page — it changes what happens behind the scenes on your plan. We're not part of a holding group with pre-negotiated volume deals that quietly steer business toward specific media owners, and we're not on a commission structure that rewards pushing you toward the highest-margin channel. You see what's being spent with media owners and you see what you're paying us, and the two are never blurred together.
That matters most at the channel-mix stage, which is exactly where a conflicted agency has the most to gain by nudging you somewhere that suits them rather than the brief.
Fee structures, honestly
We don't charge our clients directly for media planning and buying. Our fee comes as a standard commission from the media owner when a booking is placed — agreed transparently and disclosed upfront, so there's never a hidden mark-up on your invoice and you always know exactly what you're paying for the media itself.
How we charge is agreed upfront, in writing, before any plan is built — no surprise mark-ups discovered at invoice stage. We're happy to talk through the model on a first call, before you commit to anything.
When to bring VCM in
The earlier we're in the conversation, the more room there is to plan properly rather than react. Clients who bring us in at brief stage — before a channel's been chosen — get a plan built around the objective; clients who arrive with a channel already picked get our honest view on whether that channel is actually the right one, which is sometimes an uncomfortable but useful conversation.
This is the same principle whether the brief is a single test campaign or an annual plan across every channel we cover — auction houses like Sworders come to us at the start of a sale cycle, not halfway through it, for exactly this reason.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a media planning agency and a creative agency?
A creative or branding agency designs your logo, builds your website and makes the advert. A media agency — VCM — decides where that advert should run, negotiates the price, books the space, and makes sure it reaches the people most likely to buy from you. We don't design adverts; we buy the space they run in.
How much does a media planning and buying service cost?
There's no direct fee to you for media planning and buying — we work on a standard commission basis, earning a percentage from the media owner when a booking is placed, agreed transparently and confirmed in writing before any plan is built. Get in touch for a straight answer on your specific brief.
Is there a minimum budget to work with VCM?
No fixed minimum. Plans have ranged from a few thousand pounds for a single test campaign to six-figure annual budgets running across multiple channels. We'll always tell you honestly whether a given budget is large enough to do what you're hoping it will.
How do you measure whether a media plan is working?
Against the metrics that actually matter to your business, agreed before the campaign goes live — sales, leads, footfall or brand metrics, not vanity impressions. We review performance regularly: where it's working we double down, where it isn't we say so and change it.
Can VCM plan media alongside our existing in-house or creative team?
Yes. We're a media agency, not a creative agency, so we regularly work alongside a client's existing design or branding team — we handle where the advertising runs and how it's bought; they handle how it looks.
