Local business advertising: big-agency thinking, right-sized.

Local businesses and regional SMEs deserve the same calibre of media planning as national brands — without the overheads, the layers and the bills that come with a big agency. That’s exactly what VCM does.

Who we work with

Independent businesses, regional retailers, professional service firms, local trades and family-owned operations across Kent and the wider UK. From single-location businesses spending £5–10k a year, up to regional groups deploying six-figure annual media budgets. If you run a Kent business weighing up where to advertise, our guide to choosing an advertising agency in Kent is a good place to start.

How we work with smaller budgets

Three things keep our model viable for smaller clients:

  • We don’t carry holding-company overhead
  • We focus on what works in your specific market — not “integrated” theatre
  • We use late space heavily for local clients, where the relevant geographies frequently come up at deep discounts

Where local businesses win

Regional press

Daily and weekly local titles — still highly read in their territories, often surprisingly affordable, and a strong direct-response environment for footfall and local enquiry.

Local radio

Sub-£100 spots in some markets. Regional BBC and commercial radio remain effective for trades, services and time-sensitive local promotions.

Geographically-targeted digital

Through Refine, we run highly-localised Google and Meta campaigns. Within a 5-mile radius, or a specific town, or a specific postcode set.

Out of Home — local

A six-sheet on the right roundabout, or a transport poster on the right route, can punch well above its weight for local brands.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum budget needed to advertise on local TV or radio?

Local commercial radio campaigns can start from around £2,000–£3,000 for a two-week burst. Regional TV (ITV regions) typically requires £5,000 or more to generate meaningful frequency. We'll give you an honest view on whether a budget is large enough to work before you commit.

Is digital advertising better than traditional media for local businesses?

It depends on your customer. Digital — particularly Meta and Google — is strong for customers actively searching or browsing. Traditional media (radio, press, OOH) builds awareness with people who aren't yet looking. Most effective local campaigns use both. We plan the mix around where your customer actually is.

Can you target advertising to a specific town or postcode area?

Yes. Radio transmitters map to specific geographies; OOH is planned by location; regional press covers defined areas. Digital targeting can go to postcode level. We plan local campaigns to match your trading catchment.

How local businesses compete in media

Local businesses are often priced out of media in their head — not in reality. Regional TV, local commercial radio and regional press all have rate cards built for local advertisers, and as a late-space buyer we can stretch those budgets further still. A £5,000 monthly media spend, bought efficiently, can generate meaningful reach within a defined trading area.

OOH is particularly effective for local campaigns. A cluster of roadside 6-sheets or bus shelters in the right postcodes generates frequency with local commuters and residents at a cost that digital campaigns often can't match on a cost-per-aware-person basis.

How VCM works with local advertisers

We work with local businesses the same way we work with national clients: from a media brief, with a plan, and with clear accountability on what the budget is expected to deliver. We don't have a minimum spend threshold.
